One of the most important factors of calf scours is the water loss due to the diarrhea in the calf. It is important to replenish the fluid but just giving a calf water is not enough. Without an electrolyte solution added to the water the damaged intestines cannot absorb the water.  The salt in the electrolyte solution will allow the water to pass through the intestines. Keeping a calf well hydrated during any illness or period of decreased food intake as recommended.

can be add to water, placed in a nurse bottle, and fed to a calf in the same way you would milk replacer insuring the amount of fluid the calf  is taking in.

Calf scours the runny watery poop that many calves placed on milk replacer will get.  There are many different treatment options of scours; some are simply added to the nurse bottle, while others require administering a calf bolus pill at any time. The three main products I use to treat scours are Deliver, Maxi Sorb, and  Sustain III. Deliver has been a great product and my first choice, has a simple two-day process that gets the job done. Bolus pills also work well, many times I find they are easier to administer when we are feeding more than one calf on the bottle. It is just easier to restrain one calf in the pen and apply the bolus, instead of trying to make sure the right calf gets the right bottle and then fight the others from steal the bottle with Deliver in it. Sustain III the calf must be a month old and Maxi Sorb can be used at a younger age. Be sure to read the product label to understand the dosage amount and follow up treatments of any product before you administer, you can use the following link for veterinary product information.
